The Uvongo pier needs urgent attention

Last Saturday morning we witnessed an old man falling off the Uvongo pier directly onto the rocks below.

DEAR Editor,-

Further to the article in last week’s Herald with regards to the danger of fishermen falling off the Uvongo pier, last Saturday morning we witnessed an old man falling off directly onto the rocks below. He was very lucky that, apart from many abrasions all over his arms, legs, back and the back of his head, he didn’t appear to have broken any bones. I think the back of his head took most of the impact. The other fishermen didn’t even notice him falling and it was only when folk started running towards the pier that they realised something was wrong.

Some people sitting on the rocks managed to pull him out. We took some strong sweet coffee to the injured man and another woman very kindly ran across to call the lifesavers on the other side of the beach. They arrived promptly with first aid kits and since all ‘appeared to be okay’, we left for home. Personally I think he needed to visit the hospital to be checked for concussion because he was very confused and obviously in shock when they pulled the poor man out of the water.

Maybe this incident will motivate the ‘powers that be’ to get this pier attended to before the imminent Christmas holidays?
