OPINION: ‘All is not fine with these fines’

The Traffic Department gives ‘happy go lucky Christmas cracker fines’ – You never know what fine you are going to get!

DEAR Editor,-

The Traffic Department gives ‘happy go lucky Christmas cracker fines’ – You never know what fine you are going to get!

Is the traffic department trying to make up their own Christmas bonuses? A new traffic box was installed on the N2 where many of the cars exceed 100km down the hill in the newly demarcated 60km zone. We don’t deny that we were exceeding the speed limit, but there is no rhyme or reason for the traffic fines. Can you see any logic in the fines?

Fines received: 71km – R200; 72km – R200; 73km – R200; 74km – R200; 75km – R300; 76km – R300; 76km – R150; 77km – R150; 78km – R300; 79km – R150; 80km – R200; 82km – R400; 88km – R500; 91km – R350; 92km – R700.

It pays and doesn’t pay to drive faster! How can the same speed have a R150 price difference? I would also like it explained why going 91km versus 92km warrants a R350 difference. Again, I’m not claiming that going over the speed limit is allowable, but these fines are not acceptable or reasonable.

If there was a clear fine allocation per speed I wouldn’t be complaining, but it seems the traffic department is pulling a number out of the air to make their quota of speeding violations for the day. Additionally, the speed on the N2 should be reevaluated.

Should road users not unite and wait to pay their fines until the traffic department can clearly stipulate what the cost of speeding is. No more ‘happy go lucky Christmas cracker fines’ from the traffic department for me!
