Ugu has slapped strict water restrictions on the whole district recently which, in my opinion, should have been implemented much earlier. I believe most of us agree with this and most people will go out of their way to cooperate and comply.
Ugu has also issued an instruction that all bodies corporate and complexes should provide extra bulk water storage facilities by the end of July 2016. This will have to be done at great cost to these entities, which many can ill afford. Here again I believe that most will comply or enter into some arrangement with Ugu.
Now the question comes up – What is Ugu going to do about saving water? Not much, I presume. I am sure every resident living in this district will agree with me that Ugu is indeed the biggest culprit as far as water wastage is concerned. The extent of this wastage was revealed following a question at a recent meeting I attended at the Port Shepstone Country Club.
Officials admitted that a staggering 28 percent of all potable water treated goes to waste every month. This is not new. One just has to look at the numerous reports and complaints of municipal water leaks in the local press and social media on a daily basis, to realise the extent of the problem. Another problem is the time that Ugu takes to resolve these leaks. Some leaks stay unresolved for weeks or months.
Now comes the serious matter. When Ugu does act, it digs up and destroys the ailing infrastructure in its efforts to solve the problem, puts a piece of tape around it, and lets it lie for weeks and sometimes months before getting back to rehabilitate the damage.
I want to warn you today, Ugu, the citizens of this district are sick and tired of what is happening. If you don’t pull up your socks now, we as the DA will mobilise this community until we get the required results. It is now time to pull up your socks, do what you have to do. Stop wasting water and destroying our infrastructure. The ‘DA Blue Wave’ is coming…
