OPINION: ‘Special crime units to be reinstated’

The arrest and prosecution of street dealers, drug bosses and kingpins will finally turn the tide.

DEAR Editor,-

The news that government is looking at re-establishing certain special units, including one that deals with drugs and related transgressions is welcomed by the DA.

It is gratifying to note that the failed initiative of former police commissioner Jackie Selebi to disband formerly successful crime fighting units, is finally being overturned albeit after thousands of lives have been destroyed.

The DA in KZN has been calling for the reinstatement of these units for many years. Since 2006, drug related crime has increased by 104 percent. Meanwhile, the introduction of ‘new’ drugs, including ‘whoonga’ and ‘sugars’ has devastated many communities.

We sincerely hope that there will be firm timelines for the re-establishment of the Narcotics Bureau in KZN and expect MEC, Willies Mchunu, to urge the national minister to prioritise this matter.

In addition, we expect the unit to be properly staffed, equipped and capacitated in order to fight the drug scourge here in KZN. We wish this unit every success in breaking down the vast drug-dealing networks within the KZN province, which urgently needs the arrest and prosecution of not only street dealers, but also the drug bosses and kingpins in order to finally turn the tide.
