OPINION: ‘Reference numbers don’t fix the leaks’

Going through the right channels does not work and a different operator answers every time you phone.

DEAR Editor,-

Since March 2, I have been reporting a leak outside the complex we live in on Tucker Avenue in Uvongo because the water runs into our complex. I first called the plumber to come and have a look to see if it was pipes leaking from our complex, but he informed us that it definitely originated from an Ugu pipe outside.

I then phoned Ugu to report the leak and was told that someone would be sent to attend to the leak the next day. When nobody arrived the next day, I called again and again got a promise that someone would be sent to investigate after I received a reference number. The water was still running throughout the day and nobody arrived from Ugu.

Linda Forbes from Glen Smit Properties called them about the same leak and also received a reference number. Every time I called, I spoke to a different operator, which means that you have to explain the problem all over again. On Wednesday, March 9, I called to report that, since the leak had as yet not been attended to, I was going to the newspaper to report the bad service received.

We were without water for two days and every time you phone, they tell you that there is a plumber ‘working on it’. This is unacceptable and needs to be attended to urgently. I also took photographs of the water running into our complex and of the gaping hole left behind.
