OPINION: ‘Turn the negatives into positives’

Instead having a strategy of anti-racism in RSA, why can’t we have Rainbow Day or Rainbow Month?

DEAR Editor,-

I have reflected for a few days about last week’s front-page headline regarding racism (SCH March 18 ‘Anti-racism week crashes’. The world has gone a little crazy thinking that one fights a war with war or terrorism with more terrorism. Most will acknowledge that one uses peace in arbitration, divorce and differences between nation states. It was said that the last world war was the war to end all wars and we can all see how that turned out, with 100 wars going on as we speak.

It was Mother Theresa who said ‘Don’t invite me to an anti-anything, invite me to a peace-everything’. Congratulations on your newspaper’s recent awards – you guys are doing something right down the coast.

So here is a suggestion – South Africa is known as the ‘Rainbow Nation’, so instead having a strategy of anti-racism in RSA, why can’t we have Rainbow Day or Rainbow Month? Invite everyone (all colours) to dress up in rainbow colours and make the whole thing a positive event, rather than its negative opposite.

I like all the other terms as well: Freedom Day; Humanity Day; Peace Day – along with Rainbow Day. Caxton Publishers could be the first in RSA to start a countrywide movement, which comes from a positive place, rather than it’s opposite. From a place of love and not hate. From a place of peace and not fear. Politicians are always in the business of negativity and selling fear. Just a thought …
