DEAR Editor,-
In my opinion all fishing close to popular beaches should be banned day and night, until those crying foul learn to clean up after themselves. I live about 100m from Ramsgate’s main beach and the filth left behind on the rocks at Ramsgate Ramble, especially after weekends, is disgusting.
The stench from scraps of bait left behind is overpowering. They also leave bait boxes and containers jammed into crevices, as well as plastic bottles,
tangled fishing lines, hooks, cigarette boxes and butts and food wrappings.
Until they learn to respect the ocean and beaches used by our lifeblood (tourists), why should these trashmongers be accommodated? And while we are at it, let’s ban dogs as well. Their owners do nothing to clean up after their pets – it’s like walking through a minefield. Ramsgate Ramble is a smelly dump of detritus, left there largely by locals and its about time action was taken against all of them.
Lazy South Africans expect others to clean up after them, and in better-run cities and towns like Umhlanga, Ballito, Plettenberg Bay and many Western Cape resorts, there are repercussions, but not here. If concerned residents don’t do something about it, no one will.
