OPINION: ‘Who will be held liable for this fiasco?’

I do not see why ratepayers should finance this problem.

DEAR Editor,-

In April 2014, some fellow Herald readers and I criticised the method and materials used in the construction of the new walkway adjacent to the marine parade in Margate.

Unfortunately these shortcomings are becoming more and more apparent and the condition of the artificial wood portion is deteriorating rapidly due to vandalism and the type of construction, which is not suitable for public use.

Vandals have broken the handrails in numerous places, to such an extent that temporary fencing has been installed in a portion where multiple portions were removed.

Now it is the walkway that is being targeted. The planks have not been secured sufficiently to the lower structure, (there are many loose ones) and vandals have started removing them, creating two dangerous holes on the walking area.

The whale deck, that is constructed in the same manner, is a total mess. The floor is totally smashed – to such an extent that the deck has already been closed for a couple months.

The question now arises – who will be held responsible for this fiasco? I do not see why ratepayers should finance this problem, and, either the persons who appointed the contractor and approved the structure, or the contractor, should be held responsible and carry all costs with limitless repairs to the walkway that are imminent.
