OPINION: ‘Shabby towns are not a municipal priority’

For the same money and less travel time, I can get to much safer and nicer places elsewhere in the world.

DEAR Editor,-

Thank you very much for last week’s article highlighting the deteriorating state of Margate. I welcomed the article, because I own a flat in Colonial Sands (behind the old Amusement Park) and it pains me to watch the degradation of the beachfront area and Margate in general. There are now even prostitutes living and working in the abandoned building at the north end of the old Amusement Park. I have emailed the HCM municipal manager twice about the matter, but have received no reply. Clearly my concerns about the area are of no interest to him and I wonder about his priorities.

As a UK investor, I obviously made a terrible investment in Margate a decade ago, but at least I do have a choice as to whether or not to spend my holidays there. For the same money and less travel time, I can get to much safer and nicer places elsewhere in the world. This is a great shame for Margate, but who wants to spend their holidays in a decaying, crime-ridden town, where the authorities appear not to care a hoot about ratepayers or the local economy?
