DEAR Editor,-
The article in last week’s Herald ‘Rubbish ruins Commercial Road’ refers. When the photo was taken, the condition of the recycling depot was quite mild. It was in a shocking state the week before and I went to the municipal yard across the railway line to ask a supervisor if he could not do something about it. No such luck.
Over the past few months, three of the adjacent centre’s tenants vacated shops and all of them were guilty of dumping rubbish next to the bins. One of them even demolished dry-walling and dumped all the discarded boards there – There are still some boards there. Last Thursday morning, a ‘handyman’ contractor was seen dumping renovation rubble, which has nothing to do with recycling!
Recycling per se is a very good concept, but as long as those bins have been on Commercial Road, they have been misused and abused. And people seem to find it easier to put bags and boxes next to the bins instead of sorting the contents into appropriate bins.
Our property is on the market at present and all of the estate agents have commented on the state of the recycling depot and how it will affect the sale of property in the area. Nobody wants to buy a property and have to look at a disgusting rubbish dump outside. Rubbish is not limited to the bins either – some people just dump their garbage in the ditch.
Action is required urgently. Remove the bins from Commercial Road. Move them to an enclosure that can be controlled with a fence and gates and have a supervisor on-site to prevent illegal dumping. Perhaps have certain times of the day when recycling can be brought to the depot and notify all residents in the area of this.
It is obvious to everyone that the present system is not working.
