DEAR Editor,-
I received a speeding fine via the post today with an attached incriminating picture of my car, evidently travelling at 72kmph in a 60kmph zone in Oslo Beach. Guilty as charged – pay R200!
Upon closer inspection of the photo, I noticed another vehicle in the background travelling in the opposite direction. There was also some tiny wording on top of the photo describing the ‘direction’ as ‘away’.
This raised some questions because I was travelling ‘towards’ the camera and not ‘away’ (which was actually the other vehicle in the photograph). After contacting the traffic department and explaining my observations, I was informed that I was indeed correct and had been wrongly incriminated.
I was happy with the immediate cancellation, but what about the thousands of innocent drivers who do not read the micro-print and end up innocently paying fines of speedsters as the non-negotiable ‘evidence’ of the photo is extremely intimidating and final. The general public is totally exposed to this bordering-on-criminal abuse and ‘errors’. The use of such equipment should be terminated immediately until such time that this technicality is ironed out, tested and approved as reliable, legal and foolproof. And if it is human error then it is time to replace these people with competent workers. All fines issued in the past should be checked for this error and people must be refunded where applicable.
DERICK
