OPINION: Ramsgate should be a ‘Red Flag’ beach

Please Ugu, this is a eyesore. Send someone to assess the situation.

DEAR Editor,-

As a resident of Ramsgate, there are many concerns that require urgent attention. We are constantly warned about water shortages and Ugu keeps reminding us of the penalties involved, yet there has been a water leak in Marine Drive opposite the Crayfish Inn for more than a year now. Not five metres from this leak, a sewerage spill that occurred over the Easter weekend was attended to. This leak has been reported umpteen times and nothing has been done to rectify the problem. Ugu staff members drive past this every day and yet the leak is still ignored.

The skip situated opposite the Crayfish Inn and next to the Ramsgate beach walk is in a shocking state with refuse left to pile up for weeks on end. The one-way named Clarence Road, which loops back onto Marine Drive, is not used as a one-way by residents or holidaymakers. There is no signage indicating that the road is a one-way and the road is overgrown, littered with rubbish, severely potholed and unfit for vehicles.

The Ramsgate beach walk never gets cleaned and a tree that fell over many moons ago still lies above the path. This walk is the main thoroughfare for holidaymakers to access the beach. Ramsgate is said to be a ‘Blue Flag’ beach, but maybe it should be a ‘Red Flag’ beach because of all the danger and hazards that could cause injury.

Residents adjoining the back of The Crayfish Inn throw their rubbish on the pavement since the dustbins have been removed. Our gardener has to clean the mess weekly. We love our neighbourhood. We love our country – even in these harsh economical conditions. Please Ugu, this is a eyesore. Send someone to assess the situation.
