OPINION: It all starts with the MM doing his job

In the private sector, a manager with your ‘problems’ will fire his non-performing staff or be fired himself.

DEAR Editor,-

So, according to the Herald, Max Mbili is a ‘no-nonsense chief administrator’ who has earned high praise from many quarters?

But our ‘no-nonsense’ Hibiscus Coast municipal manager needs the public to spy on his staff who aren’t working – which is most of the time.

His problem, it seems, is that the managers under him are not doing their jobs.

“Lack of supervision from supervisors is the root of these problems.” says he. So where’s the problem, Max? Fire them. Then you won’t need us to take photos for you.

In the private sector, a manager with your ‘problems’ will fire his non-performing staff or be fired himself.

That’s how things work, Max. It’s called cost efficiency and that’s why we have bosses – to ‘boss’ people who don’t want to earn their pay.

But when it comes to easy taxpayers’ money and Hibiscus Coast politics, that’s not the way it seems to work at all.

The philosophy here seems to be: Let’s not rock the boat by firing people who are blatantly not doing their jobs; let’s have a bloated, overpaid workforce even if we can’t afford it; let’s watch the rubbish pile up and infrastructure collapse.

It’s okay if tourists stop coming; it’s okay if businesses continue to close; it’s okay if property prices continue to fall – as eventually, Max, will the rates … and the council jobs that go with those rates.

And that’s how the efficient world works, Max. It starts with YOU doing YOUR job.
