DEAR Editor,-
I recently took my mother to a local family doctor for a check-up as she was experiencing severe chest pains and complained of a strange sensation on her left side.
The family doctor was not available, but there was a replacement in his absence. This so-called doctor did not examine my mother or check vitals such as blood pressure and sugar levels.
She asked my mother a few questions and wrote out a prescription for influenza medication. Within five minutes my mother was sent out, but I insisted that my mother’s blood pressure and sugar levels were checked.
The results showed her blood pressure at 160/70 and sugar level at 11, however the doctor said that was normal. She told my mother to just take some aspirin, which she didn’t have.
How do these doctors get their qualifications? I was horrified at the total lack of medical knowledge and her treatment of my mother. How many elderly patients are at the mercy of ‘mercenary’ doctors who have no regard for their patients’ health?
Family doctors should ensure their replacements are competent and avoid taking any chances with the lives of patients.
