I would like to respond to the Herald article ‘Dumping is out of control’. I came back to South Africa and the South Coast a couple of years ago so naturally various friends, all fervent travellers to African countries, have come over and visited.
These people like to get a feel for the pulse of a place so go for local rather than hotels. There are a couple of really nice places of course but the general consensus of the South Coast was; Dirty, shabby, dilapidated, rustic (the polite ones), unattractive/ugly towns, rather boring.
As for accommodation (various B&Bs and small resorts) – threadbare, horrific soiled mattresses, uncomfortable beds, overpriced, smelly, unhygienic (the polite ones), the staff very accommodating and pleasant most of the time, some owners rather offhand – accommodation in other African countries was a much higher standard.
Food leaves a lot to be desired – if you are not into fast foods or greasy meals it’s not easy to find a decent meal. (One person even got food poisoning). Everyone loved the braai and most preferred ‘self-catering’.
They thought the main roads were very good, but some others as we know it’s the ‘dodge the pothole’ game.
Shopping – most goods were low quality and curios were mostly imported from other nations or China.
Beaches – so so, have you seen the beaches of some other African countries?
Then they left for Cape Town and won’t ever be back…..
Did Ugu South Coast Tourism perhaps leave ‘third’ out by mistake when they advertise the South Coast as a ‘world class destination’?
