OPINION: ‘A more structured system will work’

It is inhumane to expect the elderly to stand in queues for six hours with no toilet facilities.

DEAR Editor,-

Perhaps the Port Shepstone Licensing Department should streamline the system more efficiently by dividing the Lower South Coast into three regions, namely, a) Shelly Beach to Port Edward – Mondays and Tuesday; b) North of the Umzimkulu River – Wednesdays; and, c) Port Shepstone and Marburg area – Thursdays and Fridays.

For example, on the specified days, people from those regions will get priority from 8 to 9am and thereafter others can join the queue. People who live a long way from Sheppie will have to be in the queue before 9am.

With so many retired people on the South Coast, it is inhumane to expect the elderly to stand in queues for six hours with no toilet facilities.

Another big improvement would be if a dedicated teller for drivers’ licences, because at the moment the problem is that once you have completed the eye test and fingerprinting exercises, you then have to go to the back of another queue to wait.

Implementing a structured, logical system will eliminate long queues and help the public tremendously.
