OPINION: ‘Is this what we pay taxes for?’

What amazed us both was that at least seven police and law enforcement vehicles were in the convoy.

DEAR Editor,-

One of our workers recently passed his driver’s licence test and wanted to collect his card while I needed to drop off some papers at the Labour Department. So, last Thursday, I drove the employee to the Port Shepstone Licensing Department at about 2pm and headed off on my errand. Upon arrival, I was told that the computer system was offline. Since I only wanted to drop off papers (which is not dependent on a computer) I was prepared to wait for assistance. After a while I was told that the relevant person who could take my forms was not there, but that he would be there on the next day.

I then fetched our employee who said that the Licensing Department had closed at 1pm because staff were attending a meeting and he did not get his driver’s licence card.

While driving home along Marine Drive, we encountered a convoy of ANC supporters, led by a law enforcement vehicle with flashing blue-lights in Manaba. What amazed us both was that at least seven police and law enforcement vehicles were in the convoy! In one afternoon, three state department services were not fully available to the general public. Is this what we are paying taxes for?
