OPINION: ‘South Coasters have a heart for hospice’

A delightfully heartwarming story about an 'orphaned' fax that cannot find a home.

DEAR Editor,-

South Coast Hospice volunteer, Lisa Edwards, was given a Canon fax machine by a friend at the beginning of June to replace her own, which needed a service. When Lisa arrived home with the machine, there were too many buttons which boggled her mind, so she decided to keep her own simple one.

After being advised that South Coast Hospice already had fax machines and realising they could do with some much-needed funding, she very kindly took it to Wayne’s Auctions, where she explained to Wayne and Michelle Wridgeway that she wanted to auction it off to get money for the South Coast Hospice. Michelle advised she would be lucky to get R50 for it on auction, but Lisa said R50 was better than nothing and booked it in for auction.

On June 18, Wayne auctioned the fax, advising patrons that the funds would be going to South Coast Hospice and requested they be generous.

A woman bought it for R170, paid for it and then very kindly re-donated it for re-auction on June 25. On June 25, the fax was again auctioned by Wayne. After recounting the same story about who would receive the funds, it was bought for R170, paid for and then re-donated back for the next auction on July 2.

When Lisa went to collect the money, she was told the story about ‘Canon’, the now orphaned ‘fax that could not find a home’. She could not believe it and was asked by Wayne to attend the next auction.

On arrival, Lisa told her story of being a volunteer for South Coast Hospice and what was happening to ‘Canon’ and how much money he had raised so far. She then went on to thank both Wayne and Michelle and all previous buyers of ‘Canon’ for having a heart for Hospice. Lo and behold, the auction started and again ‘Canon’ was auctioned, bought for R220 and once again re-donated for the auction on July 9.

At the auction, Wayne performed his magic again and, yes, believe it when I say that it was bought by a very kind person for R500, paid for, and once again re-donated for auction.

I was told by Michelle that The Village Tavern, after hearing ‘Canon’s’ story last Saturday, donated a fresh, piping-hot ‘Monster Cowboy’ burger to be auctioned for South Coast Hospice and a whopping R200 was paid for it!

If you, reading this wonderful story, are one of the people who so generously contributed to these two stories, may you be blessed for your blessing to others. All funds received by South Coast Hospice are used for ongoing quality palliative patient care through our Kingfisher House In-patient Unit.

To-date a total of R1 000 has been raised by ‘Canon’, which obviously knows the morals of South Coast Hospice – We do not leave you to journey on your own through your illness. It is called ‘perseverance through adversity’.
