OPINION: ‘The community was never consulted’

Destroying natural bush is short-sighted and irrational and the long-term effects on the environment are detrimental.

DEAR Editor,-

Many Trafalgar residents were shocked and horrified by the destruction of dune vegetation on the main beach. Contrary to the claim that this illegal act was supported by the ‘whole community’, the Trafalgar community was not consulted and neither were the relevant environment authorities. A substantial number of residents had no clue that dune clearing was being planned and few would have condoned defacing sensitive dune vegetation on the public property of a Blue Flag beach.

While everyone is concerned about crime, cutting back dune vegetation and natural bush is not going to make the slightest impact on this scourge.

Has crime diminished in cities and other areas where there is no bush at all?

People come to live in and visit Trafalgar for its natural beauty – the bush, beach, flora and fauna. Destroying natural bush is short-sighted and irrational. The long-term effects on the environment are detrimental. The short-term effects on crime would be negligible.

We need to respect and nurture the environment, because without it no humans can survive.
