OPINION: ‘Setting the R4.6m record straight’

The work of renovating the building is still continuing and therefore it is still early to start questioning the whereabouts of the money.

DEAR Editor,-

Reference is made to the article entitled ‘Where did our R4.6m go?’ that appeared on page 6 of last week’s paper.

Firstly let me acknowledge that one was given a chance to comment on the story before it was published, but due to some challenges could not and now would like to set the record straight.

Let me begin by indicating that it is incorrect that the former mayor of Ezinqoleni Municipality pronounced a R4.6m towards the said project, but it was almost half of the said amount that was announced. Secondly, this was not going to be a construction of a new hall, but extensive renovations on the old dilapidated building.

What one has also established is that photos (broken window, appalling door frame, cracked wall, floor and toilet seat) that appeared with the story are photos of work that was still in progress. Actually these are some of the items that are to be replaced or fixed as part of extensive renovations.

The work of renovating the building is still continuing and therefore one can say it is still early to say there is shoddy work or to start questioning the whereabouts of the money. One needs to also indicate that during the investigation, it has been established that the story may have surfaced as a result of some bitter individuals who, due to candidate selection process, are now determined to discredit the candidate who emerged and was eventually elected as a councillor.

We are hoping that as we will be embarking on the Mayoral Izimbizo as from next week, those who are concerned will be able raise these issues in those meetings so that clarity can be given to them and the general public.
