OPINION: ‘Incorrect material was a recipe for disaster’

I hope they continue with replacing the walkway by using the correct materials - it lifts the value of our town.

DEAR Editor,-

With reference to Shona Aylward’s article ‘Damaged facilities a drain to Margate’ in last week’s Herald, the concerns raised are similar to mine (and I`m sure those of many others) as to where we are going in this country when we damage facilities given to us to enjoy. In this case, we are blaming the wrong person/people and should look at the design of the walkway structure and materials used. It was a recipe for failure.

Where sections of the structure look as though they were deliberately trashed is, in my opinion, the failure of the jointing materials which only needed a slight bump or two to fall apart.

The use of plain timbers as a supporting structure to support the walkway planks could never be successful in this environment. The walkway should have been made of reinforced concrete with stainless steel handrails. Of course the cost will be excessive, but it will last for a long time, which in itself will be a saving.

The municipality should be congratulated for attempting to improve the area in our town, but the current materials used was a waste of time and is probably only suitable for fire now.

I hope they continue with replacing the walkway by using the correct materials – it lifts the value of our town.
