OPINION: “Thank goodness sense has prevailed’

It was always about money.

DEAR Editor,-

THANK goodness sense has prevailed and the Margate beachfront pool is to be fixed before the holiday season gets under way.

Municipal spokesman Simon April disingenuously announced that the pool could not be fixed because the plans were missing. Arrant nonsense.

Plans are not needed to fix a structural fault. A competent structural engineer would easily pinpoint the problem, submit a remedial design within a week and repairs could begin.

It was always about money. Thankfully this has been found and the pool will be repaired.

But imagine the own goal the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality would have scored had the pool been left in its present state of dilapidation?

Thousands of tourists would have returned home with the negative impression of another beachfront facility having gone to ruin through neglect. And of course the word would spread.

Forget for a moment the tourists who scurry to the pool when the wind starts to blow, as it often does. What about the school galas, the endless training sessions for aspirant lifesavers and competitive young swimmers, the coaching classes, the fitness regimes of locals. And what of the local children, many of them too scared to swim in the sea?

Now let’s hope for a speedy repair job, a thorough clean up of our beaches and let’s send our visitors away with good memories of a pleasant stay.
