OPINION: ‘Did anyone think of elderly?’

The entire duration of the water shortage must have been a nightmare for elderly, infirm or frail who live alone.

DEAR Editor,-

Last week’s water cuts caused a lot of inconvenience and incurred unbudgeted costs for most South Coasters. Most people were able to get through it relatively unscathed when alternative water supplies were eventually provided by Ugu. It DID involve getting into your car and driving to collect or buy water, which most could manage, but not everyone was that lucky.

I called in to visit a 93-year-old family friend to check that she had water and was appalled to find that after buying a 5 litre bottle of water, she did not have the strength to lift it! I decanted the water into smaller containers that she could manage and then discovered that she had been trying to collect rainwater in buckets to flush the toilet. There was no way that she would be able to lift the buckets and it broke my heart.

It made me think about all the senior citizens here on the South Coast. I wonder if Ugu thought about them. How did they cope? The entire duration of the water shortage must have been a nightmare for elderly, infirm or frail who live alone.
