DEAR Editor,-
Further to my letter (SCH November 25) which provoked a lot of reactions from motorists who had received speeding fines knowing that they did not exceed 80km because everyone knows about the little grey camera opposite Bucks Farm Stall, I had an interesting discussion with a driver who had ‘Tracker’ installed.
Recently this driver also received a speeding fine of 97km, which incidentally seems to be the standard speed most are accused of, was checking the ‘Tracker’ records and it came to light that the actual speed was 82km and not 97km. One can almost come to the conclusion that the faulty reading by that particular speed control camera is around 15km, by default adding 15km to the actual speed driven.
From many discussions with local drivers it can be said that to-date I could not find a single person that had not received a speeding ‘ticket’ recorded by that specific camera, yet we all know about that camera and drive past there – even reducing speed and prompting visiting motorists to overtake at the worst possible place. Discussions with tourists gave the same impression – the only difference being that they were fined R300 whilst locals were fined R150.
Fortunately the driver with the ‘Tracker’ device will not accept it and will challenge the speeding fine. Hopefully there are more out there who have a ‘Tracker’ or similar device installed and will also take it up with authorities so that the milking of the motorist by that faulty speed control device can be stopped. It seems to be almost impossible for the normal motorist to challenge faulty speeding tickets, yet something has to happen. This should not be allowed to continue.
