OPINION: ‘Can the claim stand up to scrutiny?’

To the best of my knowledge the last professional civil engineer left Ugu 10 years ago.

DEAR Editor,-

I refer to the article entitled ‘Public cannot be reimbursed for work’ in the Herald dated February 3 which quotes Ugu District Municipality spokesperson France Zama as saying that “Within the last five years Ugu has managed to support and develop all its water services managers into qualified engineers…”

This is a very interesting claim as I understand that registered professional engineers have to complete a four year degree in engineering at a university, then serve an internment carrying out practical engineering work under the auspices of the professional body and under the supervision of duly registered professional engineers employed on a full-time basis by the employing institution.

To the best of my knowledge the last professional civil engineer left Ugu 10 years ago. There was a general manager who had a degree in engineering from the University of Zimbabwe (civil engineering), but I do not know if he ever served an internment anywhere. He left Ugu six years ago.

If their claim can stand up to any scrutiny can Mr Zama provide us with the names of the qualified engineers employed by Ugu at present, as well as the type of engineering degree held and the name of the university attended.

DAVE SNASHALL
