DEAR Editor,-
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development advertised their programme for free rabies vaccinations (SCH February 10). In particular, Southport beach was advertised for Monday, February 20, in the Southport beach parking area from 8.30am to noon.
In spite of the heavy rains and bad weather, many people turned up with their pets for the vaccinations.
The queue was very long and growing. The owner of Captain’s Anchor offered the outside undercover area of his restaurant to the staff of the department, in order that they could continue with the vaccinations.
Upon the staff members’ arrival, they proceeded to have a meeting which was absolutely endless. We were then told to go to the undercover area provided by Captain’s Anchor, only to be told after queueing up yet again that the staff had decided to cancel due to rain.

This kind of behaviour is disgusting and very embarrassing for the department in particular, as there was no valid reason for cancelling the programme since every effort was made to ensure suitable working conditions.
Not only is this unacceptable, but a huge inconvenience for all those people who made the effort, in spite of the weather, for the safety of their animals.
The bad weather did not deter the many people bringing their animals, but it was a mammoth task for the staff to continue working under conditions greatly improved for all by Captain’s Anchor.
No effort was made to communicate with the people in the queue, who were totally ignored by the staff. No effort was even made to remove or lift out a blue cooler box with the necessary injections – not even a pen, pencil or paper.
TOTALLY DISGUSTED
