DEAR Editor,-
In response to the letter from Herman Bothma entitled ‘Was the letter writer confused?’ in last week’s Herald, Mr Bothma seems to wonder why I should feel hard done by a ward councillor who makes little or no effort to assist residents and ratepayers in Ward 1.
True, we are only six months into the new term, but while other councillors hit the ground running during the water crisis we experienced (and still are).
Dorica Mthuli is on record stating that there was nothing she could do about the lack of water on the Port Edward beachfront and that they were ‘closed’. She subsequently went on leave.
Her attitude meant that Peter Brereton of the ratepayers’ association had to do everything ward councillors were doing elsewhere.

Things like organising water tankers and begging Ugu to fill reservoirs and repair pipes.
An average of 400 phone calls a day!
Dorica’s attitude is a far cry from former ward 1 councillor Dave Watson’s, who was working desperately in ward 2 trying to get water restored, as were councillors Ajith Rajaram, Lwazi Canca, Leon Garbade and Paul Brauteseth – just to name a few.
While Dave Watson was ward 1 councillor (and we are only going back five years), he handed out thousands of PORs (handover of RDP housing Proof of Residence).
I doubt Dorica has done ten as she hangs up the phone on residents from Nombuso and Kwalatshoda.
During his watch, a school was opened, a road tarred and a community hall built in Kwalatshoda.

He turned Port Edward beach into a ‘zero tolerance zone’ for alcohol during the holiday season, delivered 45 streetlights around the ward, had eight speed bumps installed and ensured that Torquay Road was tarred … the list goes on.
Suffice to say Dorica Mthuli has large shoes to fill and quite frankly is not capable of that, albeit the mayor, deputy mayor, speaker and municipal manager met with Port Edward ratepayers promising she would try harder, we all know it’s not going to happen.

Mr Bothma, the ‘blame’ for this fiasco should rest squarely on the shoulders of the ruling party – not Dorica. After all, who appointed the wrong person for the job?
