I write this email with immense gratitude to the staff of Port Shepstone Regional Hospital’s labour and maternity wards. On the evening of February 21, in early the stages of labour, my fiancé and I presented at the labour ward.
We were greeted by a heaven sent, well-trained midwife Sister Zinhle Mvelase.
After counselling and calming both my fiancé and I, I was admitted. The support and care I received from her and her team made me feel as though I was being supported through labour by a group of old friends, even sisters!
This was particularly helpful as I was a first time mum.
Early on Wednesday, February 22, Sister Mvelase and Sister Thembi Dlamini, together with their team, helped me deliver my bundle of joy in the most professional and effortless manner.

I believe our healthcare professionals often get a bad rap but there are indeed superstars in their midst! The aftercare I received from the sister in charge at the maternity ward was second to none.
At a time when you are at your weakest, just coming out of what seems like an intense battle, all you need is care, support and understanding which was in abundance the day I brought my baby into the world.
Sister Zinhle Mvelase, you are the epitome of what a midwife should be, and I am eternally grateful.
Thank you one and all and may the spirit of Batho Pelé continue to live in the hearts of ALL nurses and healthcare providers at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.
