ON Tuesday evening around 5.45pm nearly at the end of my usual ‘about the village’ walk with my two little dogs and approaching the entrance to Southbroom Bowling Club on Imbezane Drive, the sound of an approaching fast-moving vehicle coming up the hill from the main beach caused me to look back over my shoulder and watch the vehicle, only a couple of metres from where we were standing, thunder pass.
The vehicle passed in a flash, and then the next thing…..crash as the white vehicle (either a double cab or bakkie) ploughed right into the traffic circle, smashing the 20-year old pony tail palm.
Despite it’s ‘feet’ in cement and surrounded by bitumen, this poor old palm has survived famine, drought and flood, only to become a innocent victim of a wild, out of control motorist.
With its solid, bulbous fibrous trunk, the impact must have caused serious damage (I hope) but not sufficient to bring the vehicle to a stop.
I only wish I had had my wits about me when this happened and to have taken note of the registration number. But I didn’t and as I don’t carry a cellphone, there’s no picture of the vehicle.
All I have to show and share with readers is what remains of this former Southbroom landmark.
