OPINION: ‘Where have all our trees gone?’

It takes many years for a tree to grow, but a few minutes for someone with a chainsaw to destroy.

DEAR Editor,-

Lately it has become of great concern to us that so many beautiful trees, including indigenous ones, are being chopped down along roads in Port Shepstone – for no apparent reason.

The way that these trees are being chopped looks unsightly and often branches are left where they fell.

Could someone from the municipality please explain why this is happening?

It takes many years for a tree to grow, but a few minutes for someone with a chainsaw to destroy! Trees absorb carbon dioxide, one of the gases that contributes to global warming.

Trees help to bring rain, offer shade and are home to many birds and other wildlife – apart from the fact that they add beauty to drab surroundings.
