SOMETHING happened last week which got me thinking about vegetables.
My lunch for one of the days at work was a delicious piece of crumbed chicken, home cooked, along with some mixed vegetables from the deli at Pick n Pay.
The aroma was clearly as good as it tasted.
While I was eating, Hemraj, one of the boys from our production department, lumbered into the Lunch Zone.
He reminded me of Baloo in the Jungle Book story: because he is a bear of a bloke (and as super, super laid back as they come), and also because, like good ol’ Baloo, he was on the hunt for some lunch.
“Ay that smells laka, how’s some chow there,” he asked.
I thought about it…
He’s a helpful chap, always does my sports pages in as cooperative a way as possible, tries not to moan, I pondered.
“Sure, why not?” I said, and nudged a Brussels sprout across to the side of the plate.
“Wha’ kind?” he said, giving me the stare.
I shouldn’t have laughed but I did.
The look on his face was difficult to describe.

Like maybe a rugby player who passes the ball, only for it to be intercepted and a try scored at the other end of the field.
Or a cricketer who gets run out by his batting partner when it’s completely not his fault.
Or maybe a kid who has been denied the right to watch Barney and Friends.
Yes, I think that is closer to it.

Speaking of Barney, maybe that’s where our amiable colleague disappears to from time to time.
Forget about Baloo, could The Big Hem secretly be Barney?
Think about it, how come you never see them in the same room together? Ever?
And about those friends… well, we decided to ask a few of the production team about their least and most favourite vegetable.
Here were the answers and why;
Barbara Waters: I love butternut, hate Brussels sprouts, they’re the enemy.

Melanie Moonsamy: Pampoen, love the mushy texture. Also broccoli. My worst is brinjal (egg plant), I don’t know how people can eat that stuff.

Brennan Raymond: Give me French fries any day! Cabbage keep away, far away.
Surayya Alvi: Spinach for me, favourite. Broccoli is the worst.

Andrew Vogelaar: Enjoy cauliflower … and broccoli … oh, and peas. But please, don’t ever give me patty pans.

It got me wondering about the top nutritious vegetables, the ones we should be eating.
According to an article on BuzzFeed, these are some of the most healthy.
1. Kale.
2. Spinach.
3. Carrots.
4. Broccoli.
5. Brussels sprouts.
6. Peas.
7. Asparagus.
8. Green pepper.
