OPINION: ‘Monkeys here to stay – get used to it’

Never once was an Environmental Impact Assessment conducted on the effects of urbanisation on the natural habitat of monkeys.

DEAR Editor,-

I have been following the South Coast Herald with interest since the letter by D Bain entitled ‘Monkeys do not belong in urban areas’ was published on March 31.

Much to my amazement, there has been no response from animal rights groups, environmentalists, the SPCA, or even normal citizens to the controversial statements D Bain makes in his letter.

“Monkeys are wild animals, not domesticated like dogs and cats and no longer belong in urban areas. They cause untold damage to the little amount of bird life we have left, raiding nests and eating both eggs and fledglings.

We should be protecting our bird life from the predations of monkeys, because with so many varieties, birds can far better coexist with humankind and will hopefully be with us for many decades to come”.

Might I remind D Bain that before urbanisation impacted, the coastal forests of the KZN South Coast were the natural habitat of the monkeys.

You, D Bain, and others like you established villages and housing estates on the South Coast for your sole benefit. Never once was an Environmental Impact Assessment conducted on the effects of your URBANISATION on the natural habitat of the monkeys – who were among the first ‘inhabitants’ of this stretch of coast.

You D Bain, and others, have intruded into the monkeys’ natural environment. I ask you to pause and reconsider your statements of your letter.

Should you not consider your lifestyle compatible with the monkeys whose environment you invaded, then I suggest you relocate to a more amenable environment where monkeys do not impact upon you.

The monkeys are here to stay. Get used to it and manage your personal situation. Otherwise relocate to an environment where monkeys do not impact upon your lifestyle – Outer Mongolia perhaps?
