Zimasa in the Zone: Journalists shouldn’t be attacked, arrested and harassed

All this and more for for simply telling the truth...

SURELY journalists know where to draw the line, I mean the line between telling the ‘truth’ and ‘lies’.

Often journalists are harassed, intimidated or even threatened for investigating stories about an issue or a person that is of public interest.

Whether you are a government official, a high profile businessman, or just an ordinary citizen, if you are on the wrong side of the law, be sure the matter will be reported.

Journos have ethics and rules which bind them, I doubt any of them would risk their credibility and chances of being jailed just to paint a false picture.

It’s rather frightening that with all the efforts they put in to expose the truth, they still have to endure torture, but it’s more disturbing when it’s security agencies or law enforcement officials who are in the wrong but want everything swept under the carpet!

Just a year ago, two of The Citizen’s journalists were attacked and badly beaten by Xolobeni community members who had mistaken their identity, during the funeral of slain mining activist Sikhosiphi ‘Bazooka’ Radebe’.

What was more shocking was the fact that law enforcement officers did not assist them, but weren’t as far as confiscating their equipment. What a shame!!

FYI, journos are people too, they are special people because they are advocates for the truth. They uncover the truths and tell stories like they are. Respect them!!
