MANY head this way mainly to chill on our fantastic beaches. However, if anyone is also looking for an adrenaline rush, we can certainly oblige there too.
Maybe ‘chill’ is not the word to use after this past weekend, but that sort of weather is not the norm.

Anyway, pundits – like that cool surfer dude, Stephen Herbst – say the chilly conditions are ideal for a bumper sardine run this year.
If (possibly a BIG ‘if’) they beach, keep smart phones ready to capture the usual rumble in the shimmering surf between seine netters and Joe Public.
Then the zip line and swing at Oribi Gorge are also enough to inspire even the bravest to soil their rods.
Nearby, Scottburgh is famous in cycling circles, thanks to the sani2c and joBerg2c. Friends who took part in the former ‘epic’ this past weekend had to fight their way to the finish with rain pelting down and over mud tracks.
“It was tough, rough and we wouldn’t have missed it for the world,” they said.
Add to this our world famous dive sites – Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal – and suddenly we have so much to market.
A French couple (and their lead diver) had to swim about 9km back to shore after they lost sight of their dive boat in rough seas off Aliwal Shoal last Friday. That’s the stuff nightmares are made of, but they survived with a memory of a lifetime and a scary tale for their great, great grandchildren to pass on.
Hey! That’s not bad publicity for the coast. While our dive operators are highly skilled, Mother Nature can sometimes be harsh. And, if diving was boring, nobody would do it in the first place.
Without getting into the debate about ‘chumming’ and whether shark cage diving is good or bad, virtually anyone can sort of hobnob with ‘Johnnies’ in our seas.
It’s a pity we are not blessed with high mountains nearby as well, thinking back to a story last week about a former Scottburgh man being kicked off Mount Everest and fined R300 000 for trying to summit… on his own and without a permit.
OK, maybe we don’t need daredevils that stupid.
In fact, mountaineers are not too happy with one Ryan Sean Davy, who is still in Kathmandu feeling quite chuffed with his infamy.
“He has just made South African mountaineers look like a bunch of idiots,” said local climber Kevin Lancaster.
Most sane people would certainly agree.
