OPINION: ‘Why do people drive SUVs?’

Despite the obstacle not being any worse to negotiate than any one of the plethora of potholes on our roads, drivers of trucks and SUVs still insist on dodging into oncoming traffic to avoid the bump.

DEAR Editor,-

I travel between Hibberdene and Port Shepstone twie a day,  five days a week and it amazes me that there has to date not been a serious accident at the Umzumbe Flats bridge.

When repairs were carried out some years ago, a large ‘ridge’ was left in south-bound lane where the bridge and road meet.

Motorists took to crossing into on-coming lane in order to avoid the bump which, over time, has flattened considerably.

Despite the obstacle not being any worse to negotiate than any one of the plethora of potholes on our roads, most drivers still insist on dodging into oncoming traffic to avoid the bump.

While this is perhaps understandable (although not excusable) for those driving small vehicles, it it ludicrous that truck and SUV drivers put their lives and those of other road users at risk by taking unnecessary chances in vehicles designed to withstand more than just the usual road conditions.

Authorities need to place a camera at the bridge and fine those who seem intent on causing what could turn out to be a vary nasty accident.
