OPINION: ‘Fishing compo was fantastic’

Where do you go to an event like that and get fed a fantastic meal - all for free?

DEAR Editor,-

It is with appreciation that I write this letter. We heard through radio advertising and friends that the Pumula Hotel was hosting a fishing competition last Saturday and Sunday.

Well! What a fantastic event this turned out to be. We met up with family who were staying at the hotel, as well as fishing in the competition. We all arrived around lunch time last Saturday and were met by friendly staff who were on their toes trying to make the day a success.

Our family from Durban brought young children of around five-years-old and we had our grandson of two with us. The area where they had set up the marquee and weigh-in area for fish was child-friendly. There was a jungle gym, a sandpit, a soccer field and two jumping castles, so the children were sorted for entertainment.

During the course of the afternoon, fishermen came to the tent to weigh in their catches, which was nice to watch.

In conjunction with the fishing compo, they also had a crayfish competition for the biggest and heaviest bag, but unfortunately conditions were not good for diving and only a few were weighed in.

Many nice, big fish including couta, wahoo and yellowfin tuna were weighed in during the course of the afternoon and many kind fishermen donated their catch to the evening braai.

Fires were lit and they started cooking the fish in tinfoil, including the few crayfish that had been weighed in.

When the food on the braai was ready, we enquired where we could buy tickets and were told that if we wanted boerewors rolls we needed a ticket, but if it was the fresh seafood we were after then that was for free!

The fish was absolutely fantastic, served with either a cheese or tartar sauce. Unfortunately there were only a few crayfish, so only a few people were lucky enough to have some.

Now I ask you – where do you go to an event like that and get fed a fantastic meal – all for free? I don’t believe in this day, when times are tough, that this even happens.

To all the fishermen, well done for donating the fish and supporting the competition. To the sponsors – well done! And to the Pumula Hotel, absolutely excellent and well done on a very successful competition.
