OPINION: ‘Are we treading the same road as our northern neighbour?’

Zimbabwe all over again. Be afraid citizens, be very afraid.

DEAR EDITOR:

An uneducated but not unintelligent man, on becoming president of South Africa, who truly and honestly wanted to improve the lot of his people, would surely surround himself with competent, talented and honorable people to fullfil his election promises.

He would initially disregard party politics, gender, sexual orientation, colour and religion to select the most suitable team to sort out the mind-numbing horrors and human disrespect of the apartheid era and facilitate an economic recovery.

He would invite industry, finance, commerce and society to meet with government and design plans to normalise society – and then actually implement those plans so all citizens got a fair chance to benefit.

And what have we got?

We have a plan to maintain an uneducated electorate (so uneducated that they seem not to understand the meaning of the word ‘corruption’) – to keep them frustrated and demoralised until they blow by creating unrest to such an extent that a state of emergency is declared.

The constitution is suspended. Elections are held over (cancelled) and we end up with a president for life.

Zimbabwe all over again. Be afraid citizens, be very afraid.
