OUR beloved country seems to be boiling over with anger as we are bombarded daily with warnings of ‘gunpowder, treason and plot’… and alleged ‘state capture’, of course.
It’s a novel-in-waiting that could well go back to 1606 when a chap named Guy Fawkes was foiled in his attempt to blow up Westminster Palace on November 5. Ironically, he was hanged on January 31, which happens to be this columnist’s birthday.

Diwali has now replaced Guy Fawkes Day, the latter a carry over of our colonialist past, but the Hindu celebration also causes many to ‘explode’ over their love of pets. (Later, guys, later… wait for Diwali to overreact.)
However, we must be careful not to let this national angst cloud our thinking when it comes to local matters.
After all, surely we all have a common goal: To see our neck of the woods (and coast) prosper?
Enough of this political hot air about rates boycotts, calling for heads, etc.
Leave that for the next round of elections.
No names, no pack drill, a DA Ray Nkonyeni councillor tells a story about how he just sat down one day for a casual meeting with a few of his ANC counterparts.
There was no grandstanding, no need to score Brownie points, no ulterior motives… just good old honest debate.
This is only his side of the story of course, but he was glowing with enthusiasm recounting their tête-a-tête. Without the normal bickering in chambers, they were all surprised to find common ground.
Now, if only that thinking would sink in with Ugu District Municipality councillors as well. Instead of some sniping to their converted on social media rant sites, surely it would be far more constructive to sit down and agree on solutions to the common denominator? Water!
Hats off to AfriForum’s Wessel Pretorius for pleading with his followers to tone down the lingo in their ongoing ‘Anti-DD’ crusade, but that still does not mitigate his posting of municipal manager Naidoo’s personal cellphone number on Facebook.

There were subsequently calls for him to post Mr Naidoo’s home address as well.
Well, think of this: Those people are no better than the Black First Land First ‘mob’ who ‘invaded’ journalist Peter Bruce’s home in Johannesburg recently.
One can already anticipate the counter argument: “DD is a public figure.”
Well, so are you, Wessel, and I (because of this column). I promise not to ‘invade’ your house if you don’t ‘invade’ mine. (Unless there’s good wine, of course.)
