From the Word: ‘Wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord’

In amongst the gloom there is always hope.

Lamentations chapter 3 vs 22 to 26

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.

23 They are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness.

24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him.

25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.

26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

MY understanding is that this was written at about the time that Jerusalem was under severe threat from Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

The Jews were about to be bundled off to captivity, but they did not want to go. Not without a fight, anyway.

However, Jeremiah the prophet, had advised that they should go peacefully, and that it would be better off for them, that it was part of God’s punishment for their turning away from Him.

He had previously advised the king of the Jews not to seek help from Egypt, and that whole-hearted repentance and a breaking away from idolotrous practices was what was needed.

Of course, they did not want to hear it.

In short, Jeremiah’s opponents – and there were many – wanted him out of the picture, dead preferably. And he wailed to God about it.

But in amongst all the gloom and doom of what Jeremiah spoke, both in the book of Jeremiah, and again in Lamentations, comes five verses which bring hope.

God’s mercy and love never ceases. Never. Ever.

Yes, He does bring discipline and correction which we don’t usually like, but this doesn’t change the fact that His heart is one of mercy and love.

He is faithful. Things may not always go they way we want on Earth, and there are things that happen that are difficult to understand, but God, in the eternal sense will remain faithful.

Through Jesus Christ, He has promised eternal life to those who believe in Him.

In the meantime, He is our hope in a world gone mad.

Therefore, we seek Him and His peace and His way of doing things. That is our only chance of any calm in the storms of life.

Quietly bring the matters of your heart to Him everyday.

God doesn’t miss anything. You don’t have to go about yelling and shouting to get His attention.

He knows. He’ll bring you through.
