OPINION: ‘Who does the land really belong to?’

The indigenous population of today must elect a leader to represent them and their interests in parliament.

DEAR Editor,-

I think its high time we got the land issue sorted out once and for all so that we will then know where we stand in regard to land and can decide what will be the best thing for individuals to do regarding the outcome.

I am a non-resident and do not have the right to vote unless I become a citizen. I am also white and only moved to South Africa when the first democratic election was held, giving the majority of the population a right to vote for the first time.

I was hoping things would be different compared to the rest of Africa when it came to a new government and with apartheid gone. I have to pay the same taxes as everyone else and at present own property in a urban area.

There is a lot of talk about the land issue going back as far as Jan van Riebeeck, so maybe historians can help us out here and put together a map of who the indigenous tribes were, who lived where – and draw up boundaries.

The indigenous population of today must then elect a leader to represent them and their interests in parliament.

The question remains: Who does the land belong to?

* The private person who has the title deeds today;

* The bank;

* The present day government, or

* The indigenous population?

I also watched a programme on SABC in which they were talking about the meeting held between Nelson Mandela and PW Botha and the discussion that was held behind closed doors.

It was about how political matters were handled, including the land issue.

What do remaining members still alive who sat in on these discussions have to say about this thorny issue?

It’s not only whites who could lose property, but also any other races that settled in this country after Van Riebeeck.

I would like to have this issue settled once and for all so that we can move forward and concentrate on the economy, crime, etcetera.
