OPINION: ‘Protest action is misdirected anger’

The impact of protests is felt by ordinary law-abiding, tax and rate paying individuals, not those responsible for the grievances.

DEAR Editor,-

There has been a lot of discourse in the media regarding racism and the racial divide in South Africa.

In my humble opinion, the answer simply revolves around people’s behaviour.

The country is burning and there are protests every day. These are disruptive, destructive and very often dangerous.

Besides the local water crisis, recent incidents include the trashing of the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital by nurses and the torching and looting of trucks on the N3, never mind the blockading of roads and incidents of stone-throwing.

The impact of these protests is felt by ordinary law-abiding, tax and rate paying individuals, not those responsible for their so-called ‘grievances’ – the very people they elected to office.

This only serves to entrench attitudes, which once established, are not easily altered.

This pervasive culture of violence must not be allowed to continue. Perpetrators must be brought to book and there must be retribution.

The government must put an end to this unruly behaviour by employing the services of the army, Saps and private security companies, if necessary.

Only once we live in a tolerant and civil society can we possibly hope to contemplate a ‘Rainbow Nation’.
