OPINION: ‘South Coast bridges are left to rot’

If there was a way to avoid this part of Marine Drive, I would definitely use it.

Dear Editor,-

I attach two photographs of the St Michael’s bridge across the lagoon.

The joins that run across the road are deteriorating daily and are fast becoming a problem for road users.

These joins are widening and deepening and will cause damage to tyres and vehicle suspension – especially for bikers and those who do not own a 4×4.

If there was a way to avoid this part of Marine Drive, I would definitely use it – especially with the new traffic light not being synchronised and the shoddy workmanship on the ridiculous ‘speed bumps’.

There is no excuse for this. Does somebody have to have an accident before the municipality or Transport Department do something about this. They have fixed the railing, for which everyone is grateful, but why not maintain the bridge – which is a busy part of the road?

Most of the bridges on the South Coast are in a terrible state. Why is it that the public always has to highlight problems – problems that are supposed to be taken care of as part of an ongoing maintenance plan?

Do the authorities or ‘bosses’ not use the roads on the South Coast? We are constantly frustrated about the lack of interest and the absolute ‘don’t-care’ attitude of our municipalities and their workers.

What are we ratepayers actually paying rates for? We demand that the bridge receives some much-needed attention – maybe this time proactively?
