I’ve read many different articles trying to find the most dangerous city in the world. Business Tech reports that Pietermaritzburg is the most dangerous city in the world, and it’s only a two-hour drive from us. I’ve already written about a mass murder that took place in Pietermaritzburg last year, but this city also had councillors and traditional healers murdered, and in this crime hot spot, people were seen burnt alive.
Next up is Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, securing second place. I relocated from this beautiful city mainly due to the crime. The latest crime statistics show an alarming increase in crime rates in this city. We all remember the video of the failed cash-in-transit heist that went viral; that was in the streets of Pretoria.
Third place goes to Caracas, Venezuela, and fourth place is secured by Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
South Africa is back in fifth place with Johannesburg, the city of gold, where if you don’t make it, you take it. So, in the top five most dangerous cities in the world, South Africa, alarmingly, has three spots.
Taking sixth place is Durban, once again, too close for comfort. Durban’s beautiful marine parade was a highlight to all tourists visiting the area, but today, many find it too dangerous to visit the area. Hotels and resorts in the area are concerned for the future of their business if the crime rates don’t come down.
In seventh place is Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. This province also recorded the highest number of sexual offences in the country, and 2328 lives were lost in six months due to violent crime. Carte Blanche recently had a story on how the crime in the Eastern Cape has negatively influenced the tourism trade.
Out of the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world, South Africa is home to half of them, 50%, scary. South Africa also has the highest unemployment rate in the world; we have to see the correlation here.
Something needs to be done, but until then, I am happy with the comparative safety the South Coast provides.
