It was day six last Wednesday without electricity.
Who knew that as upstanding citizens, with timeous payments for services rendered and not rendered, we would be in this boat?
To think that this is not a technical fault is what is most upsetting. It can be solved in the next half an hour. If only the substation would be opened and the switch turned back on.
Food must be finished the same day. Milk won’t last longer than a few hours. Who knew that bread could become mouldy overnight?
There’s no next day anymore, no future to look forward to. There’s no use thinking of ‘when power is turned back on’ because it’s such a hopeless situation.
Due to past water issues, most also rely on tanks for water. The pump won’t work without electricity. So, for most in the area – no lights = no water.
Children are unable to sleep in this heatwave. Those who are working must make some means to hand wash clothes before going to work and to wear them dishevelled the next day.
Relationships suffer. Everyone is hot, irritable and frustrated. Patience has run out.
God only knows what we are going through. The only consolation is that God doesn’t sleep. People cannot build their happiness or salary victories or wars on the tears, heartache, sweat and blood of others. Especially when the people they are punishing are completely innocent.
We are the targets of ruthless bullying and criminals (whoever they may be).
As a teacher, it pains me to think that this holiday should have been a means of unwinding and relaxing after a difficult year in the classroom.
There’s no joy or happiness left in this world. Everywhere we turn, there are just people willing to go to drastic lengths to hurt others.
