After receiving requests for donations of drinking water from residents, the Port Shepstone Lions Club sprang into action.
According to Lion Denis Meyer, Hibberdene has been without a reliable water supply for several weeks, adding that the situation has become serious.
Meyer said the initial organised donation of 100 five litre bottles of water was donated to the Living Word Church in Umtentweni.
“On Tuesday, May 3, Port Shepstone Lions received a desperate request for drinking water from the Hibberdene Food For Life project. The bottles were delivered to the project on the same day by Lion Dale McGarry.
The club then secured a very generous donation of R5 000 from the Lions Club of Reitz in the Free State and a further anonymous donation of R2000,” said Meyer. He added that Sheppie Lions then provided an additional R3 000 and purchased R10 000 worth of water at a reduced price.
Meyer said the bottled water was delivered by the supplier to the project in Hibberdene on May 4 where community members were already waiting in line to receive two water bottles each.
“Lion Richard Borradaile, Lion Lady President Estelle O’Neill and Lion Lady Jane Massey visited the project and officially handed over the donation to Felicity Govender who runs the Food For Life project. An additional consignment of bottled water, organised by Lion Perry Chetty was also sent from Lions Clubs in Durban. Lion Craig Curnow also provided 80 bottles of five litre bottled water to a local community support activist who assists needy families in the Umzumbe and Pumula area where there have also been prolonged water outages,” said Meyer.
He added that Port Shepstone Lions is grateful to all involved in providing relief to the people of Hibberdene and surrounding areas who have been struggling, especially the elderly. Meyer said the Lions will monitor the situation closely and try and assist again should the need arise.
