The former Marburg Secondary pupil said Surviving Lungelo is her first published book, adding that it tackles issues of ignored depression in the black community, inter-racial relationships, abortions, femicide as well as domestic violence.

She added the reason for writing the book was not only because she is presently studying counselling psychology or because she is troubled by the ongoing senseless killing of women, but also because she has two siblings who suffer from intellectual disabilities.

“It was time I voiced out and addressed the elephant in the room. I managed to publish and design the book after I was invited to a book summit in Durban, which is where I met a publisher who helped me with the process of editing and publishing,” she said.

Speaking of the Articulate Africa Art and Book Affair, Zondo told Fever that she is nervous while being extremely grateful for the opportunity. Originally from Nyandezulu, Zondo said she hopes that being part of the festival will open more doors for her.

According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, Articulate Africa is the flagship literary and art fair for the municipality’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit.

Mayisela said it is one of the key projects of Durban’s United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) City of Literature designation which aims to showcase the city’s talent in various creative fields.
