Blankets and food donated to children’s centre
Children's Day has its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva in 1925.
In celebration of International Children’s Day, Ikhayalethu Home for Love and Care in KwaNzimakwe received food and blanket donations from the deputy minister of Social Development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.
The donation was a partnership between the Department of Social Development and the South African Democratic Teachers Union in KwaZulu-Natal. International Children’s Day is celebrated annually on June 1, which coincides with Child Protection Week.
Children’s Day has its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva in 1925. Under the theme, Let us all Protect Children during Covid-19 and beyond, Child Protection Week was observed from May 29 until June 5.
According to the Department of Social Development, Ikhayalethu Home for Love and Care is a centre for disabled children which was also severely affected by the devastating floods in April.
The centre was established after the late wife of Inkosi Bheki Nzimakwe of KwaNzimakwe, actively lobbied for a proper facility for children with disabilities in the rural area.
Inkosi Nzimakwe provided a piece of land and building commenced in 2012. A management board was then elected by the community and a centre manager was appointed. In December 2013, the staff and children moved into the completed building.
