Walk to raise awareness on social ills

According to the organisers, the walk is also aimed at raising awareness on social ills such as gender-based violence, unemployment and more.

The Free Methodist Church in Gamalakhe invites the public to join its peaceful walk to commemorate the youth of 1976 on Thursday, June 16.

The walk will start at 9am near the Gamalakhe Lifestyle Centre and will end at the Gamalakhe Civic Centre.

According to the organisers, the walk is also aimed at raising awareness on social ills such as gender-based violence, unemployment and more. They added that they have also organised placards for those who will be attending.

The organisers emphasised that they will not be handing over a memorandum to any police station or local political leaders.

“We are a Christian organisation under the Free Methodist Church of Southern Africa. We subscribe to verses such as Ephesians 6 verses 12 which reads ” For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. We will be presenting our requests and prayers to God,” said the organisers.

They added that the idea was motivated by the youth of 1976, who took it upon themselves to fight the injustices of that time. The organisers said the walk is a first of its kind, adding that they hope to make it an annual event.

“”Everyone, every denomination even adults are more than welcome to join the walk. Social ills affect everyone, young and old,” said the organisers.
