New deputy mayor for Umuziwabantu

According to sources, the special council meeting came after a motion of no confidence was tabled against Ncane and Mbata, and supported by a number of councillors.

Six months after the local government elections, Umuziwabantu Municipality council replaced its deputy mayor Mondli Ncane and speaker Victor Mbata.

Ncane represented Aljamah while Mbata represented the Democratic Alliance. The two were overthrown during a special council meeting last week. Nonhlanhla Luthuli of Abantu Batho Congress (ABC) was voted in as the new deputy mayor while Patros Shebi of the African National Congress (ANC) was named the new speaker of council.

According to sources, the special council meeting came after a motion of no confidence was tabled against Ncane and Mbata, and supported by a number of councillors.

The newly elected speaker of Umuziwabantu Municipality, Patros Shebi said the council has committed itself to catching up on time lost caused by the recent political instability in the municipality.

He said in the next few days, a council meeting will be convened to consider the 2022/2023 financial year budget and many other important items which were delayed and affected by the instability in council.

“This will enable us to fast-track service delivery and ensure that we continue to uphold governance and statutory compliance as the municipality,” said Shebi.
