Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) received R4 million from Idwala for the construction of zip lines at KwaXolo Caves.
This was revealed by RNM municipal manager Max Mbili last Friday when the municipal leadership visited KwaXolo Caves, to explore and experience the developments at the facility.
Mbili said the zip lines will be launched between the first and second week of July. He added that the zip line is 1.1km long with a 4.8-ton cable, saying that KwaXolo Caves now also boasts a new suspension bridge.
Meanwhile, Mbili also said on July 1, the municipality will announce the new name of the entity that has been formed after the amalgamation of Ugu South Coast Tourism and Ugu South Coast Development Agency.
According to sources, the new name of the entity is South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise.
Ugu South Coast Tourism board chairperson, Joy Crutchfield, said the KwaXolo area has unlimited tourism potential. She said the building of ablution blocks, a restaurant, accommodation, and homestays will definitely generate jobs and tourism in KwaXolo.
Inkosi Mxolisi Xolo of the KwaXolo Traditional Council said the zip lines being built in an area that is under traditional authority will be a first for KwaZulu-Natal. “Working well with the municipality and the tourism agency, we are producing fruitful results. However, there is also the issue of roads, when it rains, some areas are inaccessible, which is a problem,” said Xolo.
RNM’s mayor, Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, deputy mayor, Sibusiso Shange and speaker Zodwa Mzindle and councillors tried out the suspension bridge and also abseiled to the KwaXolo Caves.
